E-NEXT is an FP6 Network of Excellence that focuses on Internet protocols and services. Basically it is a merging of two COST Actions: COST263, on Quality of Future Internet Services, and COST264, on Networked Group Communication. An FP5 IST project E-NET was funded for 18 months from middle of 2002 to coordinate E-NEXT creation.

The general objective of E-NEXT is to reinforce European scientific and technological excellence in the networking area through a progressive and lasting integration of research capacities existing in the European Research Area (ERA). The detailed objectives of the Network are divided into two dimensions: the Research dimension and the Integration dimension. This reflects the two complementary lines of action of the Network of Excellence.

E-NEXT research interests include:

  • QoS in the large, including dependability

  • Programmable networks, networks on demand

  • Multimedia content distribution infrastructure

  • Next generation Internet including IPv6 and Grid

  • Resource accounting, security, management.

The concept driving E-NEXT integration is a stronger coordination of independent research initiatives within each state with European scale initiatives to access in a more coherent way to international scientific collaboration. This is applied to the particular research field of technologies to allow the integration of computers and networks into the everyday environment, being accessible to every ordinary citizen, providing access to multitude services and applications through self configuration and easy-to-use interfaces. It must be remarked that the terms “computers” and “networks” should not be just identified to PCs and the Internet, but taken in their widest possible interpretation as “any electronic device” and “any type of personal, local or wide area network, either wired or wireless”.

The E-NEXT work is aligned wit the e-Europe+ initiative to make a wide spectrum of Internet-like services accessible to all citizens of Europe within the shortest timeframe and to achieve a truly networked European society. As a relevant component of this framework, E-NEXT technological developments will contribute to the convergence of the conventional media group technologies (publishing, music, radio and video broadcasting) with the Internet and Mobile Network technologies, facilitating the business and social convergence of both sectors.
